A Glimpse of the Past with “The Manxman”
The Harbour Trust is proud to support the Village Hall Committee in a special screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s "The Manxman" at the Village Hall on 19th October. This remarkable silent film, set and filmed in Polperro in 1929, offers a rare glimpse into the village’s history, showcasing imagery of the harbour and its fishing fleet as it was nearly a century ago.
"The Manxman," directed by a young Alfred Hitchcock, offers a visually striking snapshot of life in Polperro. Locals from the time were cast as extras, and the Village Hall audience will be on the lookout for familiar faces —ancestors of today’s community, perhaps?
Historic Boats Returning to Polperro Harbour
PHT are also looking forward to welcoming back two historic boats into the harbour soon: "Maggie" and "Nellie", both of which were working vessels during the time "The Manxman" was filmed - 95 years ago!
"Nellie," owned by Roger Puckey, and "Maggie," owned by Mike Berry, are both being carefully restored in the local area. These vessels, now nearly 100 years old, are steeped in the village’s maritime heritage. Restoration work has been ongoing, and both boats are expected to sail back into Polperro Harbour next year, marking a significant moment for the community.
“Nellie” close to completion of her restoration
"Maggie" herself has quite the story
Once a familiar sight in Polperro’s harbour, she’s been through significant restoration work. What started as a simple TLC project turned into major surgery for this grand old boat, ensuring that she will be seaworthy for decades to come.
